Whether you’re looking at sending your kid to college for the first time or back after a summer at home, it’s time to talk to them about voting. For our 18- to 22-year olds, this is the first time they’ll be able to participate in a presidential election, but the hurdles of how to cast a ballot are high for new voters. As a college professor who gets to see a new set of students navigate elections and all the other transitions to adult life, I know they need your help.

In the last national election, the 2022 midterms, only 23% of eligible 18-29 year olds turned out to vote. The general election of 2020 had a higher share of young voters, with 50% of 18-29 year old participating, but the pandemic backdrop of that contest was different from this time around in ways that probably helped young people get to the polls. Unlike in 2020, kids who have graduated from high school with plans for college will be leaving the family home rather than staying home for zoom lessons. In 2020 states quickly adopted procedures to facilitate easier mail in balloting, but many have since returned to more restrictive mail-in and absentee voting policies. Though 50% is the highest share of young voters ever participating in a presidential election, it’s still far behind the voter participation rates of older voters, with 75% and more of those over 65 exercising their right.

[Data: US Census]

When young voters are registered, their voter turnout overall is better, but it’s not easy to navigate a new system for the first time. Registration is the administrative hurdle to voting that parents can help their children scale for the first time. Though youth voter registration varies a good deal by state (only 35% of young voters in Utah are registered, while 69% of young voters in Oregon are) on average, according to the most recent U.S. Census totals the share of 18-24 year olds registered to vote across the United States sits at 43.4%, while registration rates for those aged 65 and up ranges from 66% in Arkansas to 86% in Kansas.

Related: You Need These Important Legal Forms When Your Child Turns 18

There are, however, steps parents can take to ensure their children who are now of voting age can participate in our elections and will, therefore, be more engaged with politics in the U.S.

5 Ways to Ensure Your 18-Year-Old Can Vote

1. Encourage kids to register to vote with their college address as soon as possible after moving in. Registration deadlines vary by state, and many of them come quickly after move- in date.

2. Highlight the importance of checking out early voting options in states that offer it. Voting early helps remove barriers like transportation and waiting in long lines on election day.

3. Discuss open and closed primaries. In states with closed primaries, new voters must register with a party if they want to participate in a primary election.

4. Go to your child’s state registration website together or start at vote.gov. They may need information like their social security or driver’s license number depending on the state.

5. Let your kid know you’ll be willing to talk about the upcoming election with them and offer to look over a sample ballot together. Young voters who have someone willing to do a “practice round” with them are more likely to turn out on or before election day.

By having these conversations and providing the necessary resources, parents can set their children up for successful civic engagement and show that voting is a vital part of adulthood, but one that takes a little know-how to get done. These discussions also offer an opportunity for parents and children to learn more about each other—something that will feel nice before empty-nesting—and about the government, which is something that we all need to get better at. At a time when politics feels chaotic, grounding conversations about voting logistics is a gift to our kids.

Want to raise civic-minded teens who understand the importance of political engagement? Check out How to Raise a Citizen (And Why It’s Up to You to Do It) by Lindsey Cormack, now available for pre-order. In her book, Cormack offers a practical approach to discussing political issues and the inner workings of the U.S. government with children, while encouraging teens to vote.

10 Posture Exercises to Help You Stand Tall and Feel Better https://gethealthyu.com/posture-exercises/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 17:22:34 +0000 https://wellnesspubconnect.com/?p=39499 Discover 10 posture exercises that will strengthen your back, core, and shoulder muscles to help you stand taller and feel stronger.

Whether you’re at the office, hitting the gym, or simply going about your daily activities, maintaining good posture is essential—not just for appearances, but for your overall well-being.

Good posture strengthens your body, increases flexibility, and promotes balance, reducing back pain and boosting energy levels. Additionally, proper alignment minimizes stress on muscles and ligaments, lowering injury risk.

And let’s not overlook the mental health benefits; studies suggest that maintaining an upright posture can enhance mood, decrease negative thoughts, and combat fatigue.

Ready to improve your posture and reap these benefits? Here are 10 posture exercises designed to help you stand taller and feel better. They work on strengthening the back muscles, core, and shoulders.

1. Child’s Pose

This restful yoga pose gently stretches your lower back, hips, and thighs, promoting relaxation and flexibility.

How to Perform Child’s Pose

Kneel on the floor, sit back on your heels, and stretch your arms forward. Rest your forehead on the mat and hold for a few deep breaths.

2. Cat-Cow

This exercise increases spine flexibility and strengthens your core muscles, relieving tension in your back.

How to Perform Cat-Cow Pose

Start on all fours. Inhale and arch your back (Cow), then exhale and round your back (Cat). Repeat for several cycles.

3. Forward Fold

This stretch elongates your spine, calms your mind, and releases tension in your neck and shoulders.

How to Perform the Forward Fold

Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Hinge at your hips and fold forward, reaching towards the floor. Hold for a few breaths.

4. Standing Chest Opener

This exercise opens up your chest, countering the effects of slouching and promoting a more upright posture.

How to Perform the Standing Chest Opener

Stand tall and clasp your hands behind your back. Gently lift your arms, opening your chest. Hold for a few breaths.

5. Glute Bridge

Strengthening your glutes supports your lower back and improves posture by realigning your pelvis.

How to Perform a Glute Bridge:

Lie on your back, bend your knees, and place your feet flat on the floor. Lift your hips towards the ceiling, hold, and lower.

6. Thoracic Spine Opener

This exercise enhances mobility in your upper spine, which is crucial for maintaining good posture.

How to Perform a Thoracic Spine Opener

Lie on your side with knees bent. Extend your top arm and rotate your upper body to open your chest towards the ceiling. Return and repeat on the other side.

7. Plank with Arm Reaches

This variation of the plank challenges your core, shoulders, and back, helping you build a strong foundation for better posture.

How to Perform Plank with Arm Reaches

Assume a plank position. Reach one arm forward, hold briefly, and return it. Alternate arms while maintaining stability.

8. Mid Back Rows

Strengthening your back muscles helps you counteract the slouching that can occur from sitting too much.

How to Perform Mid Back Rows

Using a resistance band or weights, pull them towards your chest while keeping your elbows close to your body. Squeeze your shoulder blades together.

9. Doorway Stretch

This stretch releases tension in your chest and shoulders, encouraging a more open and upright posture.

How to Perform the Doorway Stretch

Stand in a doorway, place your hands on the frame, and lean forward slightly to stretch your chest.

10. Pilates Swimming

This dynamic exercise enhances your core strength and back stability, contributing to improved posture.

How to Perform the Pilates Swimming Move

Lie face down, extend your arms and legs, and lift them off the floor. Flutter your arms and legs in a swimming motion.

Incorporating these exercises into your routine can make a significant difference in how you carry yourself every day. Consistency is key, so aim to perform these exercises regularly to enjoy a more aligned and confident posture.

Other Tips To Improve Posture

Having good posture is all about the activities you incorporate in your daily life.

I love that my Apple Watch tells me to stand up every hour. When working on my computer, I can get super focused and never move for hours. By just simply standing up, moving your spine, doing a few cat-cows, you are helping your body lubricate your joints.

Good ergonomics while sitting at your desk matter also. Keep your monitor at eye level. Sit up tall and keep your shoulders away from your ears, meaning do not hold tension in your neck.

Keep your feet on the ground. Even investing in a lumbar support for your chair may help.

Do Posture Correcting Devices Work?

While posture-correcting harnesses might seem like a quick fix, the real, lasting solution lies in strengthening your body from the inside out. These devices might provide temporary relief by holding your body in the correct position, they don’t actively strengthen the muscles needed to maintain proper posture on their own.

These devices often do the work that your muscles should be doing, leading to muscle weakness over time. Once you remove the harness, there’s a good chance you’ll revert to poor posture because the underlying muscular support hasn’t been developed.

The approach I recommend is focusing on exercises that strengthen the muscles responsible for good posture, particularly the back, core, and shoulders. This way, you build the strength necessary to maintain proper alignment without needing an external device. By consistently engaging in strength training, especially exercises that target postural muscles, you not only improve your posture but also promote long-term spinal health, reducing the risk of injury or discomfort.

Remember, standing tall isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling good too.

Why Bodrum Is the Newest Mediterranean Hotspot to Visit https://travelcurator.com/destinations/why-bodrum-is-the-newest-mediterranean-hotspot-to-visit/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 00:46:34 +0000 https://wellnesspubconnect.com/?p=39463 Long a destination for Istanbul’s elites, Bodrum is continuing to have its moment in the international sun. The coastal Turkish city has gorgeous Mediterranean coastline, rocky beaches, glamorous marinas filled with mega yachts, pumping nightclubs, and unassuming trattorias draped with bougainvillea. While the center of the city has been somewhat massified, it’s surrounded by picturesque bays and genuine villages.

Home to a well-preserved medieval castle built partly with stones from the 4th-century BC Mausoleum at Halicamassus (and one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), Bodrum’s name extends beyond just the city and refers to the entire peninsula, in which southwestern Turkey juts out into the Aegean Sea. It’s an anchor of the Turkish Riviera, which stretches up to Antalya and is also called the Turquoise Coast. That nickname is an accurate one, as the region is full of vivid blue coves and bays, some home to traditional farmer’s markets, others to impressive archaeological sites, and others still to some of the most opulent resorts in the region.

WHY GO NOW

bougainvillea-draped terrace at macakizi in bodrum turkey
Courtesy of Maçakizi

Maçakizi — the pioneering Bodrum resort that arguably started it all — has been called the “best hedonistic hotspot,” but the title could equally apply to the destination as a whole. The peninsula continues to see glamorous hotel openings, including the recent Maxx Royal, which has imported its own outpost of Mykonos’s beloved beach club Scorpios, and the upcoming Bulgari Bodrum, which is slated for 2026.

All along the coast, the beach club scene is as vibrant as ever, and the Yalikavak Marina continues to attract the super wealthy. Also cementing Bodrum as a stop on the international circuit is the MedBodrum, an international festival dedicated to gastronomy, art, and music; its inaugural edition in May attracted the likes of Kate Moss and Bob Marley’s son, Skip. Also on the culinary front: Bodrum’s addition to the Michelin guide for Turkey last year, a recognition of the high level of cooking happening in some of its top kitchens.

WHERE TO STAY

mandarin oriental bodrum aerial view
Courtesy of Mandarin Oriental, Bodrum

Even though there are now bigger and bling-ier resorts in Bodrum, the old-school Maçakizi remains one of the best places to stay. The rooms may be small by 2024 standards, but don’t worry about that: You want to be outside, whether on a sunbed on the platform “beach,” at a table in one of the restaurants, or poolside in a shaded garden. In the 25 years since it opened, the vegetation has grown in and the hospitality has grown up, but it still attracts a low-key glam mix of Turks, Europeans, and other international guests. The main restaurant was awarded a Michelin star last year, and longtime chef Aret Sahakyan recently opened a new showplace, a six-table fine-dining restaurant called Ayla, an homage to the mother of resort owner Sahir Erozan, who helped put Bodrum on the glitterati map.

Meanwhile, the Mandarin Oriental Bodrum is celebrating its tenth anniversary on Paraside Bay. The resort has all the brand hallmarks including flawless service, generously sized rooms, an enormous spa, and an array of dining options including outposts of fashionable brands like the steakhouse Atelier di Carne (a spinoff from Celebrity restaurant in Istanbul), the Chinese-by-way-of-London Hakkasan, and the Turkish haute couture patisserie Vakko. Although the anniversary party — complete with a performance by Kylie Minogue — has already passed, the celebratory spirit will be in force throughout the season.

WHERE TO EAT

orfoz, a traditional blue-chaired tavern in bodrum turkey
Courtesy of Orfoz

While the hotels, resorts, and marinas boast a slew of celebrity restaurants and high-concept eateries, Bodrum is also home to an array of excellent restaurants specializing in southern and coastal Turkish cuisine. A standout is Otantik Ocakbasi, a grill restaurant with a wood-burning oven and open fire. There, the chefs cook kebabs, dry-aged steaks, lamb chops, kofte, and lahmacun pide, a sort of flatbread Turkish pizza with ground beef. Its winning simplicity has kept it popular with locals while gaining attention from Michelin (it has a Bib Gourmand).

Another unfussy place that emphasizes quality ingredients is Orfoz, a traditional blue-chaired tavern overlooking the bay. Its fish and seafood are the stars of the ever-changing tasting menu, from tuna sashimi and shell-baked oysters served with Parmesan foam to simply grilled octopus and squid and sea snails in a wine sauce. And Iki Sandal is a celebration of another side of Bodrum dining — the traditional taverns called meyhane. The menu of hot and cold mezze draws on classic recipes that can be 100 years old and labor intensive, such as the sea bass that’s steeped for ten days in herbs in an earthenware pot.

WHAT TO DO

scicsailing in bodrum turkey
Courtesy of ScicSailing.eu

There’s nothing wrong with going to Bodrum to lounge in the sun, dance under the stars, or eat to your heart’s content, of course. But if you’re feeling the need for a cultural undertaking, the Bodrum Museum of Underwater Archaeology is worth a visit. Its 14 departments encompass 3,500 years of Ottoman, Roman, and maritime history; the shipwreck-related collection is especially impressive. Plus, it’s within Bodrum Castle, which is worth a visit on its own.

Alternatively get out of the city and onto the sea. Touring on a gulet (Turkey’s traditional two- or three-masted wooden sailboats) is a quintessential Bodrum experience. Lots of companies offer sunset cruises and day trips, but for something deeper, SCIC Sailing offers trips of one or two weeks. The company has been in the business for decades and has access to top guides and crew. The name means Sailing Cruises in Comfort, and that’s what it offers — not over-the-top luxury, but enough comfort and a good dose of authenticity. The core product is cabins that can be rented individually on group departures — and there’s no single supplement — but a second, super-luxury line is available for private charters.

Quench Your Thirst: The Science and Benefits of Proper Hydration https://foodrevolution.org/blog/what-is-hydration/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=what-is-hydration Fri, 23 Aug 2024 17:00:00 +0000 https://wellnesspubconnect.com/?p=39414 Do you take care of a garden or house plants? If so, you know how important it is to give them enough water. Are leaves starting to droop or look a little wilted? Then, it’s time for the watering can.

It’s often obvious when plants need water, but it can be much trickier for humans. In fact, some studies suggest that many, if not most, people may be chronically dehydrated.

Research from the 1990s estimated that around one-quarter of older adults in the United States may not be regularly getting enough fluids, to the point where they experience clinical symptoms. However, a survey conducted in 2023 suggested that almost half of all US residents may not drink enough water for optimal health.

That sounds a bit weird, doesn’t it? I mean, most people can tell when they’re hungry, tired, or need to breathe. What is it about dehydration that’s so hard to recognize?

Part of the answer may be that dehydration can make you less sensitive to water intake. When dehydrated, your body tries to compensate by doing more with less water, even if you’re drinking enough. This can make it difficult to notice that you’re dehydrated. It doesn’t help that as we age, our body’s ability to retain fluids decreases, and the natural sensation of thirst tends to weaken.

So, to have and maintain good health, it’s really important to understand the importance of hydration and recognize the early warning signs of dehydration.

In this article, we’ll explore the benefits of adequate hydration, the risks associated with dehydration, and practical strategies for staying properly hydrated. We’ll also discuss the significance of clean water and the role of hydrating foods and beverages in maintaining optimal hydration.

What Is Hydration?

Hydration (from the Greek word “hydra,” meaning water) refers to providing the body with adequate fluids to maintain optimal physiological functions. Your body loses water daily through breathing, sweating, and excretion, making it essential to replenish fluids regularly.

Your body is mostly water — around 50–75%, depending on your age and amount of muscle and fat — which is about 10–12 gallons.

Why Is Hydration So Important for Your Health?

Water is essential for various bodily processes, including temperature regulation, blood flow, digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste elimination. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body needs sufficient water to function properly. So, let’s look at some of the most important functions affected by your hydration status.

Hydration and Cognitive Function

In 2019, researchers in Cangzhou, China, had 12 healthy young men go without water for 36 hours and then take tests to evaluate their cognitive abilities and mood. After that, they were given a liter and a half of water to drink and were retested an hour later.

When dehydrated, the participants experienced low energy levels and decreased self-esteem. They also did poorly on tests of memory and attention compared to when they had been given water.

A study the following year found similar results. Sixty-four college students were randomized to four groups. They all fasted overnight and took cognitive and mood assessments in the morning. Then, each group was given a different amount of water, ranging from half a liter to none, and was retested.

Those who drank the most water had less anger, fatigue, and overall mood disturbance than those who consumed the least (or none). The group that drank half a liter also showed significant improvement in working memory compared to their performance before drinking.

The participants in these studies experienced temporary cognitive decline when dehydrated, but there’s evidence that chronic dehydration can cause long-term neurological harm.

In 2018, researchers analyzed the hydration levels of 1,091 patients (by testing their urine) in an Alzheimer’s Evaluation Unit. They found that patients with cognitive decline or depression had higher levels of dehydration than those without these issues. Dehydration was linked to a greater risk of developing dementia, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia.

Dehydration and Skin

Hydration is also good for your appearance and the health of your skin. A 2015 study instructed young women to drink two additional liters of water per day for a month and measured aspects of skin health before and after. The researchers found that drinking more water improved the skin, including deep and shallow hydration and elasticity (important for preventing wrinkles).

Researchers are also exploring whether increased hydration could help children suffering from atopic dermatitis, a condition that causes their skin to be very itchy, red, and dry.

Hydration and Kidney Health

Analysis of Korean health and nutrition survey data revealed that increasing daily water intake can protect against kidney problems, especially in older adults, men, and those consuming high-sodium diets. The study found that even moderate water consumption significantly reduced the risk of renal (kidney) impairment.

A 2016 literature review published in the always popular American Journal of Nephrology found that drinking more water helps protect from chronic kidney disease, kidney stones, and polycystic kidney disease.

Gastrointestinal Function and Water Intake

The bacteria in our digestive system play important roles in our health. While factors like diet and lifestyle are known to affect these bacteria, what about the source and amount of drinking water people consume?

In 2022, researchers analyzed data from the American Gut Project to assess the effects of different amounts of different water sources (tap, bottled, filtered, and well) on people’s gut microbiomes. They found drinking less water was associated with higher concentrations of Campylobacter, a potentially harmful bacteria, and that well water was associated with the most diverse gut microbiomes.

A 2024 study found that not drinking enough water can harm gut health in mice. (Our view on the use of animals in medical research is here.) When the mice had less water, they became constipated, their gut bacteria changed, and they lost infection-fighting immune cells. As a result, the mice had a hard time getting rid of a harmful bacteria called Citrobacter rodentium.

Hydration and Weight Loss

Drinking enough water can also help with weight management. A 2016 study found that adults who don’t drink enough water tend to have higher body weights and are more likely to be obese.

A 2019 study of healthy young adults in Spain found that people who drank more water had less body weight, lower body fat, and smaller waistlines.

Hydration and the Heart

Drinking enough water each day can help keep your heart healthy and reduce the risk of heart problems as you age. In 2022, researchers analyzed data from 15,000 adults aged 44–69 and discovered that those who stayed hydrated had a lower chance of developing heart failure and other heart issues.

A 2019 literature review found that dehydration negatively impacts cardiovascular function, particularly during exercise or in high temperatures.

And a 2023 meta-analysis found that drinking water or isotonic drinks (electrolyte beverages like Gatorade) before, during, and after exercise helps keep heart rates lower and improves heart rate variability (a sign of good heart adaptability).

Overall, the results showed that staying hydrated during exercise aids in heart performance and recovery.

Dangers of Dehydration

We’ve seen that not getting enough fluids can mess with your mood and your thinking. And long-term dehydration is linked to chronic neurological and cardiovascular diseases. When acute, though, dehydration can be dangerous.

When you lose more fluids than you’re taking in, your body can’t function properly after a certain point. Losing water means elevated levels of electrolytes in your blood, which can cause an imbalance of sodium, potassium, magnesium, and other molecules. Symptoms of such an imbalance can include confusion and irritability, fatigue, and irregular or fast heart rate.

Dehydration can happen simply because you’re not drinking enough water or other hydrating fluids. But there are other factors as well. You can become dehydrated due to illnesses, especially those that involve vomiting, diarrhea, or high fever accompanied by sweating. Sweating from heat or intense physical activity can also lead to dehydration, as can excessive peeing caused by medications, medical conditions, and caffeinated or alcoholic beverages.

Signs and symptoms of dehydration include thirst, dry mouth, lips, and skin, urinating and sweating less than usual, dark-colored urine, fatigue, dizziness, or headache.

These symptoms can emerge with water loss as low as 1% of body weight and can become life-threatening at 10% or more. Extreme dehydration is a medical emergency that can result in seizures, cardiac arrhythmia, hypovolemic shock, and even death.

How Much Water Do You Need?

Experts debate how much water we should drink. One catch-all recommendation for how much water you need is 9 cups of fluids a day for women and 13 for men. Another rule of thumb is to consume between one-half and one ounce of water per pound of body weight daily. That’s a big range — for a 160-pound person, that would mean between 80 and 160 ounces or 8 to 16 cups per day.

However, these numbers may be on the high side, especially for plant-based eaters who consume lots of hydrating foods such as fruits and vegetables. While we know the water content of foods, there’s very little reporting on how much those foods contribute to our total water intake. A 2016 paper examining survey data from the UK and France estimated that the average person gets about 20–40% of their fluid intake from foods.

Of course, few people are average. Many factors determine how much water you need to drink. Certain medications, high fiber intake (from a plant-based diet), and age can increase your water requirements. If you are exposed to extreme temperatures, your body demands more fluids to maintain a safe internal body temperature.

You also need to drink more if you engage in intense physical activity. If you’re planning significant exertion, such as a run or some activity that will make you sweat for a while, you may want to “pre-hydrate” by drinking a cup or two a couple of hours before your activity, followed by another cup or two about 30 minutes before the start.

And since sweat contains more than just water, it’s essential to eat food after intense sweat-inducing physical activity to replenish the electrolytes your body has lost.

Like with just about anything, you can go overboard. (That’s a metaphor, but literally going overboard involves excessive quantities of water, so I’ll stand by it.)

Drinking too much water can dilute the electrolytes in your blood. The electrolyte most affected by overhydration is sodium. And low sodium levels constitute a condition called hyponatremia, which can produce many of the symptoms of dehydration, as well as seizures and coma.

One much less serious symptom of consuming too much water is having to pee a lot. This is mainly an issue if the need to urinate wakes you up and disturbs your sleep — which is why many people prefer to do most of their hydrating in the earlier portion of the day and go to bed with a relatively empty bladder.

The Importance of Clean Water

Clean water is essential for health and hydration since contaminated water can carry dangerous pathogens and pollutants that can lead to various health issues. The pathogens in dirty water are responsible for many serious diseases, including cholera, dysentery, and giardiasis.

Non-living contaminants can also be harmful or even deadly. Endocrine disruptors, heavy metals, and other chemicals can lead to long-term health issues, including cancer and organ damage.

You may not have much control over the quality of the water that comes through your tap, but you can clean it through a home water treatment system. Popular water treatment methods include carbon filters and reverse osmosis filtration to remove contaminants and ultraviolet light to kill pathogens.

Home filtration systems have several advantages over bottled water. First, they eliminate the waste stream of single-use plastic. Second, the plastic in those bottles can leach into the water they contain, which kind of defeats the purpose. And third, bottled water companies frequently engage in questionable water sourcing — sometimes, you’re just drinking lightly filtered water from someone else’s tap.

Hydrating Foods and Beverages

Although experts recommend that water be your primary source of hydration whenever possible, people might not hydrate sufficiently because they aren’t thrilled by the taste of water.

In addition to filtering water, you can add things to flavor it to your liking. These might include citrus slices (oranges, lemons, and limes are popular), mint leaves, or cucumber slices. You can also freeze fruit in ice cubes and add them to water for a prettier drink.

Aside from regular still water, other types of water are also hydrating, including carbonated water and mineral water. (If you love carbonated water, you can get your own home carbonation system, which can save money, reduce your exposure to plastic, and lower your environmental footprint.)

Any water-based beverage is also hydrating. These include plant-based milk (which can taste great and provide a creamy texture without the problems of animal-based dairy, such as saturated fat, environmental impact, and animal cruelty), smoothies, mocktails, coffee and tea, and fruit juices.

While coffee and black teas are technically diuretics (since their caffeine makes you pee more), they still add more water to your body than they remove. On the other hand, fruit juices may be high in sugar, especially if they’ve been heavily processed.

Fruits and vegetables are the most hydrating foods. Particularly hydrating fruits are the ones that are the most likely to drip onto your clothes when you eat: melons, peaches, pears, citrus fruits, berries, and so on. High-water vegetables include leafy greens, celery, squash, and root veggies such as carrots, potatoes, radishes, and sweet potatoes.

Many hydrating beverages deliver antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and even protein along with water. Those can be good things. Others deliver sugar, phosphoric acid, artificial flavorings, and artificial sweeteners, which likely aren’t doing your health any favors. So, are you best off drinking pure water or other hydrating beverages? It depends on what’s in them. But for almost everyone, pure water is best for dental health.

Stay Hydrated for Health!

Hydration is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, providing the foundation for your body to perform at its best. Adequate fluid intake supports essential bodily functions, from regulating temperature and aiding digestion to enhancing cognitive performance and maintaining skin health. Understanding the signs of dehydration and the amount of water your body needs can help prevent the adverse effects.

Incorporating hydrating foods and beverages into your diet and regular clean water consumption can significantly improve your health. To ensure you’re staying hydrated with enough water, here are some tips:

  • Carry a water bottle with you (stainless steel or glass are probably best — not plastic)
  • Incorporate more hydrating foods into your diet
  • Set a timer to remind you to drink throughout the day

Now, water are you waiting for? Stay hydrated!

Editor’s Note: A good home water filter can ensure you’re meeting your hydration needs with clean water. One option that FRN likes is the AquaTru — a countertop RO unit that includes excellent carbon filter technology, delivers high-quality water and flavor, slashes the purchase cost, requires no installation fees, is remarkably water-efficient, and has extremely minimal maintenance costs. The manufacturer, AquaTru, states that their system removes fluoride as well as chromium-6, PFAS, and many other contaminants. It’s available now for a $100 discount for FRN members. 7 Proven Ways to Burn More Fat While Walking https://gethealthyu.com/burn-more-fat-while-walking/ Fri, 23 Aug 2024 15:29:00 +0000 https://wellnesspubconnect.com/?p=39391 Discover 7 proven strategies to supercharge your walking routine and burn more fat, tailored for women over 50. As a seasoned fitness influencer and personal trainer, I share practical tips to help you stay fit, strong, and energized on your fitness journey.

If you’re someone who loves walking but is unsure how to maximize fat burn, you’re in the right place. Not only is walking low impact and gentle on your joints, but it also helps you stay active, clears your mind, and can, indeed, help you burn fat and lose weight.

However, if your goal is to shed some pounds, you need to be strategic about it.

I’m going to share seven proven ways to burn more fat while walking and make weight loss a real possibility. These walking strategies can make all the difference!

Understanding Fat Burn and Calorie Deficit

Before I get into the strategies, it’s vital to understand how fat burning works. When you exercise, your body uses two types of fuel—carbohydrates and fats. While the type of fuel you’re burning can vary, you do tend to burn more fat when exercising in lower intensity heart rate zones, like zone 2.

If you want to learn more about heart rate zones, use my target heart rate zone calculator guide to get started!

However, the key to losing weight is creating a calorie deficit. Simply put, you need to burn more calories than you consume.

So don’t get too caught up in which type of fuel you’re using during exercise. The goal should be to move more and eat healthily to create that calorie deficit and ultimately lose body fat.

With this understanding, let’s explore seven strategies to pump up your walking routine to help you achieve your weight loss goals. Don’t be afraid to take it up a notch, be inspired to know you are getting stronger and more fit.

1. Increase Your Step Count

The most obvious strategy to burn more fat while walking is to increase your step count. Once you’re truly aware of your movement, you become motivated to match it daily and maybe set a goal to increase your step count.

Start tracking your steps—there are many different ways to do this.

You can use any fitness tracker like a Fitbit, an Apple Watch, a Whoop band, or an Oura ring. Tracking your steps can become almost like a daily game. They say what we track, we can improve. If you’re not tracking your step count, how do you really know how many steps you’re getting in?

I set a goal for myself to hit 10,000 steps every day, and recently, I’ve increased my goal. The more steps you get in, the more calories you’re going to burn, and the more energy you’re going to expend. The more energy you’re burning, the more likely you are to get into a calorie deficit.

I explain this in more detail in my guide to how many steps you need a day to lose weight.

Some days, I hit 20,000 steps; other days, just 5,000. But my goal now is to average 12,000 steps a day.

2. Increase Your Speed

The second strategy for burning more fat while walking is another obvious one—increase your speed.

Many people don’t realize they’ve gotten into a habit of walking at a specific pace. By simply picking up the pace and doing some brisk walking, you can burn more calories. Speed walking engages more muscles, increases your heart rate, and ultimately leads to greater calorie expenditure.

Start by setting small speed goals, like walking a bit faster for 5-10 minutes, and gradually increase this duration as your stamina improves. Over time, you’ll find that you’re able to walk faster naturally, and you’ll be burning more calories without even realizing it.

3. Walk on an Incline

The third strategy is to walk on an incline. And while I have some great treadmill workouts for weight loss, this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to use a treadmill. You can look for inclines in your regular walking paths, whether it’s a hill, a set of stairs, or even a steep driveway.

Walking uphill requires more effort, engages different muscle groups, and significantly increases calorie burn.

If you prefer using a treadmill, gradually increase the incline just as you would with your step count. Start with a slight incline and work your way up to steeper angles.

This variation in terrain will not only make your walks more challenging but also prevent workout monotony.

4. Incorporate Intervals

The fourth strategy for increasing your fat burn while walking is to incorporate intervals into your walking routine. Interval training involves alternating between periods of high intensity and low intensity.

For instance, you could walk at a brisk pace for 2 minutes, then slow down for 1 minute, and repeat this cycle.

Using a timer, pick up your pace using a work-to-rest ratio that challenges you. I normally walk in a zone 2 pace, where I can comfortably talk but am breathing through my mouth not my nose.

With intervals, I push myself to zones 3 or 4, sometimes even jogging for short bursts. You can customize the intervals to suit your fitness level and goals.

5. Try Nordic Walking

Strategy number five is to add walking sticks, also known as Nordic walking. This involves using specially designed poles to increase resistance and improve posture and balance while you walk.

Research shows that Nordic walking can increase calorie burn by 20% compared to regular walking and uses 90% of your body’s muscles.

Nordic walking not only boosts your cardiovascular fitness but also engages your arms, shoulders, and core, providing a full-body workout.

It’s especially beneficial for those looking to add variety to their walking routine and enhance their overall fitness.

6. Add a Walking Vest

The sixth strategy for burning more fat while walking is to add a weighted vest. A weighted vest can increase the intensity of your walks, helping you burn more calories.

Start by wearing the vest around the house for 10-15 minutes a day to get used to it.

When I first got my weighted vest, I couldn’t wait to take it off. But now, I’m used to it and can feel my rate of exertion going up. It’s also great for building bone mass and improving overall strength.

I’m so passionate about my vest that I actually wrote an entire guide about using a weighted vest for walking that outlines all of the benefits, plus my expert tips. Check it out!

Remember to gradually increase the weight of the vest as you become more comfortable with it.

7. Change Your Terrain

My seventh and final strategy is to change your terrain, which challenges your body in new ways. Mix up your walking routes to include a variety of surfaces such as sand, gravel, and trails. You can also try hiking, rucking, or even snowshoeing if you live in the winter states.

Adding stairs to your routine is another excellent way to increase intensity.

Walking on uneven surfaces engages different muscle groups, improves balance, and keeps your workouts interesting. The more varied your terrain, the more calories you’ll burn and the more enjoyable your walks will be.

How Many Calories Does Power Walking Burn in Miles Per Hour?

According to a study by Washington University in St. Louis, walking at 4.5 miles per hour can burn around 200 calories for an average 140-pound woman.

On the other hand, power walking too slowly might only net you 100 calories or less for 30 minutes. So ry to keep your speed and intensity up.

Most fitness watches or trackers will tell you how far and how fast you are walking. This can be an invaluable tool to help you.

However, to track your pace on your own, measure a one-mile course using your car. Now walk that same course and time yourself. Here are your results:

20 minutes 3 mph (this is a good starting pace)
15 minutes 3.5-3.8 mph (this is a solid fast walk)
13 minutes 4-4.5 mph (this is a very challenging power walk)

Remember that you are going to make progress. Don’t be discouraged if you have a slower speed to begin you’ll still get the benefits. Just use that pace and stay consistent with your walks.

Final Thoughts

Incorporating these strategies into your walking routine can help you burn more fat and achieve your weight loss goals. Remember, the key to losing body fat is creating a calorie deficit by moving more and eating healthier.

I used to think that if I stopped running, I would gain weight. I was afraid that walking wouldn’t be enough to keep me fit. Now, it’s been 15 years since I stopped running, and I walk every day—and I’m doing great.

Walking is fantastic exercise for longevity and mental health and with these tips, you can make it an effective tool for weight loss too. If you’re ready to take your walking routine to the next level, give these strategies a try and see the difference they can make.

For personalized guidance and support, consider working with a health coach or personal trainer. They can provide tailored advice and help you stay motivated on your wellness journey. Happy walking!
